Standardisation of Astronomy (Author : Nipun Singh)

Astronomy has been observed in different parts of world for many centuries. Every region has their own way of calling these celestial bodies. But to know more about space people must share information. That is where the standardized system came into play.

Standard Names of Stars and Constellation

Johann Bayer, considered an amateur astronomer, was the first to use the system of naming of stars, that is considered standard now.

The greek letters given to star in constellations is based on their order of brightness. Alpha for brightest and Omega for dimmest star.

This picture shows the different universally accepted constellation names, with their brightest stars.

These nomenclature are good but, how these became universally accepted.

Formation of IAU
In 1919, the world came together to safeguard and promote the science of astronomy and founded International Astronomical Union. This began the universalization of astronomical terms.

Any celestial body when observed for the first time is given a particular name. What would happen if the names are based on public suggestions.

This shows that having scientific naming is better than following common knowledge. And thus, a standardized system for naming is necessary for the development of astronomy.
